Why was my card declined or why did “secure verification” fail?
Why a card is declined
- The card number, expiration date, CVV, or billing address doesn’t match what your card company has on file
- There isn’t enough money in the account, or the payment is over your card’s limit
- Your card company thought the payment looked unusual and blocked it to protect you
- Online payments are turned off for your card
- The card has expired or hasn’t been activated yet
- The payment was tried several times in a row, so your card company paused the card for safety
What to do
- Check Payment History first. Make sure the payment didn’t go through before you try again, so you don’t pay twice.
- Look for a text, email, or app message from your card company. If you made the payment, approve it.
- Check that your card details and billing address match your card company’s records exactly.
- Turn off pop-up blockers, or try a different web browser or device.
- Call the number on the back of your card. Tell them the payment is yours and ask them to allow it.
- Pay with a different card or with your bank account. If you don’t see another payment method, contact your Property Management Team.
